Anti Wrinkle Treatments

ANTI WRINKLE INJECTIONS

Anti wrinkle injections are a popular aesthetic treatment used to significantly reduce the movement of the muscles causing expression lines (dynamic lines) specifically the frown, crow’s feet and worry lines on the brows which may also be treated as an ‘off label indication. Injectable anti-wrinkle treatments are a quick and convenient way to smooth out those lines on the forehead and around the eyes and mouth without any need for surgery. Successful treatment may not cause the expression lines themselves to disappear completely.

The differences in prices between the brands are reflected by these chemical differences, and also by the brand name.

You should not be treated for anti-wrinkle treatment if you have a known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation. This treatment is not suitable for patients who have generalised disorders of muscle activity (e.g. myasthenia gravis), Patients where aminoglycoside antibiotics or spectinomycin are already being used or are likely to be used, patients who have bleeding disorders of any type or Pregnant or lactating women. Anti-wrinkle treatment is not recommended by the manufacturer for use in individuals under 18 years of age. Treatment interval should not be more frequent than every three months as this can increase the risk of antibody formation.

Results tend to last 3-4 months. The movement will begin recovering from 8 weeks. Frequent treatment at intervals of less than 3 months is not recommended. Repeating treatment when movement recovers will deliver optimum results over time. Frequency of treatments may be reduced according to the quality of your skin and your response to treatment. Wrinkles are part of the ageing process. They can be attributed to sun damage, effects of gravity and muscle contraction resulting from facial expressions such as frowning and laughing. Wrinkles due to the effects of gravity represent natural sagging of tissue with age and are generally only improved by surgical tightening procedures. Wrinkles caused by muscle contraction such as frown lines, forehead lines and crows’ feet, can be improved by Botox treatment.

The trade name for Botulinum toxin is Botox® and Dysport®, they are produced by bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. Several types of toxins have been identified, but type A, which is used commercially, is the most potent.

The toxin blocks the transition of chemical messages from the nerve to the muscle so that the muscle stays in a resting state for a period of 8 to 12 weeks on average.

This may be only a partial reduction in movement allowing some remaining movement or a full block in which case there is very little remaining muscular movement in the area – this very much depends on the amount administered and location of product placement –treatment may be tailored to suit your individual requirements. Your expected treatment outcomes and whether they can be achieved will be discussed at the time of consultation.

Anti-wrinkle treatment is used for the upper face compared with the middle and lower thirds, due to the upper face experiences less volume loss over time, and many of the tell-tale signs of ageing are related to the development of rhytids. As a result, treatment with botulinum toxins in this area generally yields good results.

How many areas of anti-wrinkle treatment are used for the upper face?

The upper face is divided into three main areas, these include the forehead lines, frown lines and crows feet.

There are several anti-wrinkle products on the market, the most common preparations in the UK all contain Botulinum Toxin Type A. The most common anti-wrinkle products are Botox, Bocouture or Azzalure. Although they all contain the same amount of “active ingredient” (150kD Botulinum Toxin Type A neurotoxin), differences do exist between these products.

Allergan Botox is the most famous brand, mass-produced first in the 1990s for the treatment of facial aesthetic concerns. Widely used across medical specialities of treatment of ocular, muscular and neurological conditions. The product contains a 900kD complex, composed of the 150kD neurotoxin plus complexing proteins. Similar complexing proteins are found in nature around the natural toxin. Allergan Botox has the most clostridial protein of the 3 products described here (5ng per 100-unit vial). The product contains Human Albumin and Sodium Chloride excipients for the long-term stabilisation of the active ingredient.

Bocouture is another familiar product on the market, this product contains the 150kD neurotoxin not complexed by other proteins, with only approximately 0.6mg of clostridial protein per 100-unit vial. The product contains Human Albumin and Sucrose excipients. The accompanying proteins may stimulate an immune response against the agent, though can offer protective and mechanistic properties to the agents.
